Kagoshima - Beschreibung
Kagoshima ist die südlichste Grossstadt der vier Hauptinseln Japans und hat dementsprechend auch fast subtropisches Klima. Die Stadt entstand aus einer jōkamachi 城下町 (Burgunterstadt), wobei die Feste des Shimazu-Clans 島津氏 heute nicht mehr existiert. Kagoshima hat heutzutage ca. 541'000 Einwohner und ist eine relativ lebhafte Grossstadt.

Schnee und Palmen - Winter in Kagoshima
Der Shimazu-Clan bestimmte die Stadtgeschichte massgeblich und weitete seine Macht einst fast auf ganz Kyūshū sowie bis nach Okinawa aus - mit Kagoshima als Machtzentrum. Die Shimazu erkannten jedoch gegen Ende der Edo-Zeit die Zeichen der Zeit und strebten die Modernisierung an. So schickten sie heimlich Studenten ins Ausland, um westliche Produktionstechniken zu studieren.
1877 kam es jedoch zum Satsuma-Aufstand 西南戦争 reaktionärer Kräfte um den vormals gemässigten Saigō Takamori 西郷 隆盛 gegen die Regierung. An dem Aufstand nahmen ca. 30'000 ehemalige Samurai teil, die den Konflikt bis nach Kumamoto trugen. Nach sechs Monaten war der Aufstand niedergeschlagen und Kagoshima lag in Trümmern. Und wurde wieder aufgebaut. Und im Zweiten Weltkrieg erneut zerstört.
Strassenbahn im Stadtzentrum
Aufgrund der zweimaligen Zerstörung ist das Zentrum sehr modern und nicht allzu attraktiv. Dominiert wird die Stadt vom nahgelegenen, immer aktiven Vulkan Sakurajima, der die Stadt hin und wieder mit Asche zudeckt. Aufgrund der Ansicht mit dem Vulkan im Hintergrund wird die Stadt auch als Neapel des Ostens 東洋のナポリ bezeichnet. Passenderweise ist Neapel auch die Partnerstadt.
Allein der Vulkan und die Gesamtansicht sind eine Reise wert. Es sollte angemerkt werden, dass Japanischkenntnisse in Kagoshima nur bedingt von Vorteil sind! Der lokale Dialekt ist sehr schwer verständlich. Das beginnt bereits am Bahnhof: Da ich die Ansage, von wo der nächste Zug ins Zentrum fährt, nicht verstehen konnte, fragte ich einen anderen Passagier. Der zuckte nur mit den Schultern und sagte "Ich komme aus Tokyo, ich hab leider auch nichts verstanden". Achtung: Die Seite über den Vulkan Sakurajima ist separat, siehe Sakurajima Mitake 桜島御岳.
Anreise
Der JR Tsubame Ltd. Express JRつばめ特急 fährt entlang der Westküste über Kumamoto (2¾ Stunden) bis nach Fukuoka in gut vier Stunden. Dort kann man in den Shinkansen umsteigen.
Neu!!! Am 13. März 2004 wurde das erste Teilstück des JR Kyushu Shinkansen eröffnet. Die Strecke soll, wenn sie fertig ist, von Kagoshima bis Hakata verlaufen. Vorerst wird die Strecke von Kagoshima Chūō 鹿児島中央 (Kagoshima Central, vormals "Nishi Kagoshima") bis Shin-Yatsushiro 新八代 südlich von Kumamoto eröffnet. Fahrtzeit: rd. 40 Minuten (vorher 2h10' mit dem Tsubame Ltd. Express). Fahrpreis: 9420 ¥. Von Yatsushiro braucht man bis Hakata 1h40'.
Die JR Nippō-Linie JR日豊本線 fährt die Ostküste entlang über Miyazaki 宮崎 (dort muss man umsteigen) und Beppu 別府 bis nach Kokura 小倉 - dort kann man auch in den Shinkansen umsteigen.
Die meisten Züge fahren übrigens nur bis Nishi-Kagoshima 西鹿児島 (Kagoshima-West), was etwas abseits liegt. Man kann mit lokalen Zügen aber direkt bis Kagoshima fahren, dauert 10 Minuten und liegt nahe der Piers der Sakurajima-Fähren.
Vom Hafen fahren täglich Fähren zu den grossen Inseln der Präfektur - so bis Amami 奄美 und weiter bis nach Okinawa 沖縄 (ca. 24 h).
Einen Flughafen gibt es freilich auch, von dem man zu all den Inseln im Süden sowie zu allen wichtigen Städten Japans kommt.
