Kumamoto - Beschreibung
Die Stadt ist nicht allzu gross, spielte aber in der Vergangenheit eine grosse Rolle. Seit 1607 war Kumamoto Burgstadt und Sitz eines lokalen Clans, der überregional die Künste förderte. Und seit dieser Zeit die Gyōji 行司 (Sumō-Schiedsrichter) stellt. Noch heute müssen angehende Yokozuna 横綱 (höchster Rang im Sumō) ihre Lizenz in Kumamoto abholen.
Während der Meiji-Restauration kam es zu einigen Aufständen der Samurai und Feudalherren gegen die Regierung. So auch in Satsuma 薩摩, einer historischen Provinz südlich von Kumamoto, rund um Kagoshima. Kumamoto wurde von den aufständischen Samurai erobert, konnte allerdings nur 55 Tage gegen die kaiserlichen Truppen gehalten werden. Nach der Niederschlagung 1877 wurde die Festung niedergebrannt.

Neben dem Schloss gibt es eine ganze Phalanx an Museen - so das Präfektur-Museum, das Stadtmuseum und eine Austellung über Handarbeit usw. Kumamoto ist ein gutes Sprungbrett Richtung Vulkan Aso, Kagoshima und Beppu - das Schloss ist, obwohl es ein Nachbau ist, allemal einen Abstecher wert. Auch das nächtliche Kumamoto ist nicht zu verachten.
Anreise
Die Stadt Kumamoto befindet sich auf halbem Wege zwischen Fukuoka und Kagoshima. So braucht man mit dem JR Tsubame Ltd. Express JRつばめ特急 nach Fukuoka 1¼ Stunden, bis Kagoshima ca. 2¾ Stunden (dazu jedoch siehe unten: Durch den Shinkansen verkürzt sich die Fahrtzeit auf eine Stunde!). Das könnte sich bald ändern - man baut eine neue Shinkansen-Strecke, welche auch Kumamoto durchqueren würde. Dann wird sich die Fahrzeit wahrscheinlich mehr als halbieren. Tipp am Rande: Wenn man von Fukuoka nach Kumamoto fährt, sollte man in der Gegend um Ōmuta 大牟田 kurz vor Kumamoto rechts aus dem Fenster schauen - man hat einen schönen Blick auf den aus dem Nichts aufragenden, hochexplosiven Unzen-Vulkan 雲仙.
Neu!!! Am 13. März 2004 wurde das erste Teilstück des JR Kyushu Shinkansen JR九州新幹線 eröffnet. Die Strecke soll, wenn sie fertig ist, von Kagoshima bis Hakata verlaufen. Vorerst wird die Strecke von Kagoshima Chūō 鹿児島中央 (Kagoshima Central, vormals "Nishi Kagoshima") bis Shin-Yatsushiro 新八代 südlich von Kumamoto eröffnet. Fahrtzeit: rd. 40 Minuten (vorher 2h10' mit dem Tsubame Ltd. Express). Fahrpreis: 9420 ¥. Von Yatsushiro braucht man bis Kumamoto 20 Minuten.
Wer Zeit und Geld hat - der Sakura Yakō さくら夜行 (Nachtzug "Kirschblüte") fährt täglich von Tōkyō nach Kumamoto! Startet um 18:03 im Bahnhof Tōkyō-eki und kommt am nächsten Tag um 11:40 in Kumamoto an. Kostet allerdings inkl. Zuschlag gleich mal rd. 24'000 Yen! Nur Hinfahrt! Der Railpass gilt leider nicht für Nachtzüge.
Der JR Aso Ltd. Express あそ特急, heute: 九州横断特急 fährt drei Mal täglich bis nach Beppu 別府 an der Ostküste. Dauert knapp drei Stunden. Unterwegs, nach ca. einer Stunde, hält er auch am bzw. im Vulkan Aso.

War etwas überrascht, das hier mit keinem Wort der 水前寺公園 (suizenji-kouen) erwähnt wird, ist ein sehr schöner Park/Garten der meiner Meinung nach definitiv einen Abstecher wert ist :)
Ausserdem gehört der 黒川温泉(kurokawa onsen) zu den berühmtesten Onsen in Japan (wie ich gehört habe) - war selber aber leider noch nicht dort, weil ich gerade krank wurde, bevor ich mit einem japanischen Bekannten hingehen wollte.
per Zufall hab ich noch irgendeinen Tempel auf einem Hügel entdeckt, ich glaube ein Geschenk von Indien oder so etwas. Habe aber vergessen wie er heisst... jedenfalls ist die Architektur für Japan ungewöhnlich, das Ding ist ganz weiss und man hat einen schönen Ausblick auf die Stadt. Klein aber sehenswert (und gut zum entspannen), wie ich finde, mein Geheimtipp :) Wenn mir nur der Name einfallen würde... dürfte aber auf den meisten Karten eingezeichnet sein, einfach mal nach einem Tempel auf einem grünen Fleck (Hügel) Ausschau halten. Man kann übrigens mit dem Auto rauf.
Oh, und wer in Kumamoto ist, MUSS 馬刺し (basashi) essen (rohes Pferd ;) - unglaublich lecker.
Bin nun mal ein bisschen Fan von Kumamoto, war zwei mal dort und zwei gute Freunde kommen von dort.
Hallo! Diese Seite ist gerade mein Reisebegleiter, da ich momentan gschäftlich in Kumamoto unterwegs bin.
Der Siuzenji-kouen "Siuzenji-Park" ist auf jedenfall ein MUSS für meine Begriffe. Vor allem, wenn alles schön grün ist absolut sehenswert. Zum Aso Vulkan werde ich wohl erst im Februar kommen.
Basahi (rohes Pferd) habe ich gestern probiert. Es sind kleine Stücke, etwas dicker als Capaccio, darauf geriebenen Ingwer und etwas grün und ab damit in die Sojasoße. Wirklich erstaunlich lecker.
