Yokohama - Beschreibung
Die Stadt Yokohama ist mit 436 km² verhältnismässig gross und hat rund 3.3 Millionen Einwohner - das macht die Stadt selbst zu Japan's zweitgrösster Stadt (da Ōsaka und Nagoya nur eine Zusammenballung von verschiedenen Städten darstellt). Yokohama hat zudem Japan's grössten Hafen. Erstaunlich, denn vor 150 Jahren gab es Yokohama einfach nicht.
In der Meiji-Zeit, genauer gesagt 1859, wurde der Hafen Yokohama eröffnet und von Anbeginn dem Japanisch-Amerikanischen Handel gewidmet. 1872 wurde die Stadt mit der ersten Eisenbahnlinie Japan's - natürlich gen Tokyo - gesegnet. Seit 1889 hat Yokohama das Stadtrecht.

Die Stadt ist in insgesamt 18 Stadtteile (-ku) unterteilt. Das Zentrum und auch der Bahnhof Yokohama selbst befinden sich in Nishi-ku 西区 (Nishi = West). Im Bahnhof Yokohama befindet sich gleichzeitig das Kaufhaus Sogo - seines Zeichens das grösste der Welt!
In Sichtweite zum Bahnhof liegt das ehrgeizige Projekt Minato Mirai 21 みなとみらい21 (Hafen-Zukunft 21. Jhd.) - ein neues, kleines und hypermodernes Subzentrum mit dem Landmark Tower ランドマークタワー als "herausragendes Merkmal". Dieser ist mit 296 Meter momentan der grösste Wolkenkratzer Japan's - knapp vor dem Sunshine City Ikebukuro. Der Bau ist 70 Etagen hoch. Ganz oben befindet sich eine Aussichtsplattform, auf die man mit dem schnellsten Fahrstuhl der Welt (noch!?), sprich mit max. 45 km/h, gelangt. Kostet allerdings mal ebend 1000 Yen - ein teures Vergnügen. In ganz Asien ist zur Zeit der Wolkenkratzerboom ausgebrochen: Die Petronas-Towers in Malaysia, ein paar Jahre die höchsten der Welt, wurden durch das 2003 fertiggestellte 101 Financial Center 台北101 (508 Meter) in Taipei/Taiwan in den Schatten gestellt. In Planung ist übrigens der sogenannte Millenium Tower in Tokyo - er soll angeblich 799 m hoch werden.

Die Hikawa-maru
Yokohama hat sich mächtig herausgeputzt in den letzten Jahren. Der ganze Abschnitt zwischen Minato-Mirai und dem Yamashita-Park ist richtig schön geworden. Besonders erwähnenswert ist dabei die Daizanbashi-Pier 大桟橋ふ頭 mit dem internationalen Fährterminal. Die gesamte Pier wurde mit Holzlatten ausgelegt, die wild geschwungen das Gebäude selbst regelrecht verstecken. Ein gelungenes Projekt. Leider fahren keine Fähre mehr von dort - es legen nur noch Kreuzfahrtschiffe an.
Unweit davon liegt die Hikawa-Maru 氷川丸 vor Anker - ein schmucker Dampfer, der rund um das Jahr 1930 die Linie Yokohama-Seattle-Vancouver bediente. Wird heute als Museum benutzt. Die Hallen in der Nähe werden zum Teil als Ausstellungsgelände genutzt. So fand Ende 2005 dort die Triennale (Ausstellung moderner Kunst) statt.
Ebenfalls ziemlich neu ist der Akai Kutsu-Bus あかいくつバス (auf Deutsch "Rote Schuhe"). Die Busse sind für die Touristen gedacht und sehen alt aus. Sind sie aber nicht wirklich. Der Akai Kutsu-Bus fährt vor dem Bahnhof Sakuragi-Chō 桜木町 ab und klappert alle wichtigen Punkte ab. Endhaltestelle ist der Hügelpark. Alle hier beschriebenen Sehenswürdigkeiten sind mit dem Bus erreichbar. Die Fahrt dauert insgesamt 40 Minuten. Und das beste - egal, wie lange man mitfährt, die Fahrt kostet nur 100 Yen. Finden auch zahlreiche Einwohner toll, und so ist der Bus schnell voll. Beim Einstieg gibt es ein nützliches Pamphlet, wahlweise in Japanisch oder Englisch. Von Sakuragi-chō fahren sie am Wochentag immer um :00 und :30 ab; am Wochenende um :00, :20 und :40.

Es gab mit Minato Mirai 21 genau wie bei Ōmi/Tokyo ein Problem, genügend finanziell potente Bauherren zu finden. Vor den Hochhäusern Minato Mirai's befindet sich das Maritime Museum マリタイムミュージアム mit allerlei Attraktionen. Südlich von Nishi-ku, im Stadtteil Naka-ku 中区 (Naka = Mitte), liegt die Chūkagai 中華街. Eine Art Chinatown, bestehend aus ein paar Strassenzügen mit chinesischem Flair. Im Prinzip nichts Besonderes, aber sehr beliebt, da es hier unzählige chinesische Restaurants gibt. Dementsprechend gut besucht ist das Viertel.
Minato Mirai 21 ist architektonisch interessant - hier durften sich einige Architekten austoben. Das setzt sich auch im Inneren fort - gerade die unteren Bereiche sind oft zu Einkaufszentren ausgebaut worden.
Im grossen Aquarium in Hakkeijima
Wer Zeit und Interesse hat: Etwa 15 km südlich von Yokohama, direkt an der Küste, befindet sich der Hakkeijima Sea Paradise 八景島シーパラダイス Vergnügungspark. Neben einer Achterbahn und den sonstigen Gimmicks gibt es ein grosses Gebäude mit vielen Aquarien sowie ein Delphinarium. Das Hauptaquarium ist zwei? drei? Stockwerke hoch und man kann mit einer Rolltreppe hindurchfahren.
Die Anfahrt ist etwas umständlich. Man fährt vom Bahnhof Yokohama mit der Keihin Kyūkō Honsen 京浜急行本戦 nach Kanazawa Hakkei (dauert ca. 20 Minuten) und steigt auf die (übrigens führerlose) Seaside-Linie um. Von dort dauert es nochmal 20 Minuten. Die Aquarien sind wirklich schön (und wohl die grössten Japan's), der Rest ist Geschmackssache. Eintritt kostet 2400 Yen.
Anreise
Es gibt zwei Linien, die Tokyo mit Yokohama verbinden. Da ist zum einen die Keihin Tōhoku-Linie 京浜東北線, die von Saitama über Ueno, Tokyo, und Kawasaki nach Yokohama fährt. Von Tokyo dauert es 38 Minuten, die Züge fahren sehr häufig. Zum anderen gibt es die Sōbu-Kaisoku-Linie 総武快速線, die von Tokyo nur 25 Minuten braucht. Mit den Zügen der Sōbu-Linie kann man weiter bis nach Kamakura fahren. Ansonsten gehen zahlreiche andere Linien in jegliche Richtung ab. Wer in das Herz von Yokohama will, sollte nicht in Yokohama, sondern am Bahnhof Sakuragi-Chō 桜木町 aussteigen. Liegt direkt am Landmark-Tower.
Yokohama hat einen Shinkansen-Bahnhof. Der ist allerdings etwas abseits und heisst Shin-Yokohama 新横山. Mit der Yokohama-Linie braucht man zehn Minuten vom Bahnhof Yokohama nach Shin-Yokohama. Von dort fahren nur Shinkansen, die Richtung Westen (Fukuoka) gehen. Kodama こだま-Shinkansen halten immer, Hikari ひかり- und Nozomi のぞみ-Shinkansen nur manchmal in Shin-Yokohama (mehr dazu siehe Transport in Japan).
Von Yokohama fahren Airport Limousine Busses エアポートリムジンバス regelmässig zum Int'l Airport Narita. Ist etwas teuer, aber dafür muss man auch nicht umsteigen.
