Tottori - Beschreibung
Tottori ist Verwaltungssitz der gleichnamigen Präfektur und hat ca. 145'000 Einwohner. Die Stadt ist ein paar Kilometer von der Küste entfernt und das lokale Zentrum der Ost-San'in Region. Im Zentrum selbst gibt es nicht allzu viel zu sehen. Es gab einmal ein Schloss, genannt Tottori-jō 鳥取城, welches auf einem Hügel stehend die Stadt überblickte. Das Schloss gibt es jedoch schon lange nicht mehr. Der Grund schlechthin, nach Tottori zu fahren, sind die Tottori Sakyū 鳥取砂丘 genannten Dünen.

Ist das wirklich Japan?
Die Dünen liegen etwas ausserhalb der Stadt. Es fahren aber regelmässig Busse vom Bahnhof die ca. sieben Kilometer nach Norden zum Sakyū Sentâ 砂丘センター (Dünen-Center). Dauert keine 20 Minuten und kostet 320 ¥. Von dort fährt ein Seillift (einfach 200 ¥, hin und zurück 300 ¥) direkt zu den Dünen.
Die Dünen selbst sind insgesamt 16 km lang aber maximal keinen Kilometer breit. Die höchste Düne ist 92 m hoch. Entstanden sind die Dünen aus Flugsand. Sie scheinen sich jedoch, im Gegensatz zu den höchsten Dünen Europas (bei Arcachon am Golf von Biskaya in Frankreich) kaum zu bewegen. Im regenreichen Japan ein Stück Wüste zu erleben ist allerdings schon etwas aussergewöhnlich.

Im Dünencenter an der Bushaltestelle gibt es die üblichen Souvenir- und Imbissstände. Da die Tottori Sakyū berühmt sind, gibt es immer viele Besucher. Im Sommer stürzen sich viele Leute mit Gleitschirmen vom Hauptkamm. In der Nähe gibt es auch etliche heisse Quellen (onsen 温泉). Und der Daisen 大山, der höchste Berg von Chūgoku, liegt unweit von Tottori. Die Region ist für die interessant, die nicht nur Kultur und Historie, sondern auch mal verschiedene Landschaften in Japan kennenlernen wollen.
Anreise
Die JR San'in-Linie JR山陰線 fährt immer die Küste entlang. Der Super Oki Ltd. Express スーパーおき braucht von Matsue ca. 1½ Stunden (1200 ¥). Man kann auch mit langsameren Zügen fahren, muss dann aber meistens in Yonago umsteigen. Der Super Hakuto Ltd. Express スーパーはくと fährt in anderthalb Stunden nach Himeji und von dort weiter nach Ōsaka (2½ Stunden) und Kyōto (3h10'). Wer der Nordküste nach Osten folgen möchte, kann über Hamasaka 浜坂 und Kinosaki 城崎 nach Toyooka 豊岡 fahren (2½ Stunden, 1450 ¥). Von dort ist es ein Katzensprung nach Amanohashidate.
Einen Flughafen mit Direktflügen nach Ōsaka und Tōkyō gibt es auch.
Übernachtung
Die Touristeninformation im Bahnhof ist recht hilfreich. Einige Hotels konzentrieren sich am Bahnhofsvorplatz vor dem Südausgang. Darunter das Tōyoko Inn 東横イン (vom Südausgang nach links, ca. 300 m). Ein schönes, grosses Doppelzimmer mit allem Komfort kostet 7'560 ¥ (inkl. Frühstück). Kann bei Bestellung über Internet 1'000 ¥ billiger werden - weiss nicht, ob diese Werbeaktion öfter gilt. Wesentlich billigeres scheint es nicht zu geben.
