- Sich in das Getümmel stürzen - in Shinjuku 新宿 oder Shibuya 渋谷 zum Beispiel. Und in Kabuki-chō 歌舞伎町 bei Nacht.
- Die grandiosen Tempelanlagen von Asakusa 浅草 und den grossen Meiji-Schrein 明治神宮 begutachten.
- In den Bergen und Tempeln von Takao 高尾 herumlaufen.
- Sich die Neulandinseln, zum Beispiel bei Odaiba お台場, ansehen.
- Die zahlreichen Museen und den Shinobazu-Park in Ueno 上野, geniessen.
- Dem Kaiser in seinem Palast 皇居 am 23. Dez. oder 02. Jan. zuwinken.
- Einkaufen oder einfach nur Bummeln in Akihabara 秋葉原 oder auf der Ginza 銀座.
- Besuch des Edo-Tōkyō-Museums 江戸東京博物館 in Sumida-ku. Unbedingt! Kabuki 歌舞伎 - das traditionelle Theater, ansehen - z.B. im Kabuki-za auf der Ginza 銀座.
Allgemeines

Es gibt wohl nur wenige Japan-Reisende, die um die Hauptstadt herumkommen. Seit über 400 Jahren das politische Zentrum Japans, ist Tokyo genauso geschichtsträchtig wie modern. Viel ist vom alten Edo 江戸 jedoch nicht übriggeblieben. Das meiste wurde aus Holz gebaut - was entweder den verheerenden Erdbeben (siehe z.B. Taishō-Zeit), diversen zwischenzeitlichen Feuersbrünsten oder dem Feuersturm nach den Bombenangriffen im Zweiten Weltkrieg zum Opfer fiel.
Selbst die gewaltige Burg Edo-jō 江戸城 - damals wohl die grösste der Welt - hat nur zu kleinen Teilen überlebt. Das Kernstück selbst ist Residenz des Tennō und damit für die Öffentlichkeit zumeist gesperrt.
Und doch hat einiges überlebt - die Tempelanlagen bei Asakusa 浅草 zum Beispiel oder der grosse und bedeutende Meiji-Schrein 明治神宮.
Ansonsten ist Tokyo zu gross, zu laut, zu eng, zu erdrückend. Nach einigen Tagen seht man sich nach Ruhe und einem Waldspaziergang. Die Stadt ist zu schnell gewachsen, deshalb chaotisch und ein Moloch mit Unmengen von Menschen. Aber das sollte man auch unbedingt erlebt haben.

Verkehr - Wie komme ich in Tokyo voran?

Tokyo hat ein sehr effizientes, dichtes und anfangs etwas verwirrendes Nahverkehrssystem. Busse spielen dabei auch eine Rolle, doch wichtiger sind die vielen Dutzenden S- und U-Bahn-Linien. An einer Linie kann man sich leicht orientieren - die sogenannte Yamanote-sen 山手線. Sie ist staatlich (also eine JR-Linie) und relativ billig - Fahrkarten kosten zwischen 130 und 210 Yen. Die Strecke ist gute 20 km lang und hält an vielen wichtigen Punkten (siehe Karte links). Zur Erklärung - die rote Linie stellt die Shinkansen-Strecken 新幹線 dar.
Shinkansen Richtung Westen und Norden (also nach Sendai 仙台, Niigata 新潟, Nagano 長野 usw.) fahren meist in Tokyo ab und halten - manchmal auch starten und enden - in Ueno. Shinkansen Richtung Westen, also nach Hakata/Fukuoka 博多・福岡, Hiroshima 広島, Ōsaka 大阪, Nagoya 名古屋 usw. beginnen immer in Tokyo, halten aber seit kurzem auch oftmals in Shinagawa 品川.

Die Yamanote-Bahnen brauchen für eine komplette Runde ca. eine Stunde. Für einige Wege ist sie nutzvoll, doch will man zum Beispiel von Shinjuku 新宿 nach Tokyo 東京駅 (gemeint ist der Bahnhof), würde man mit der Yamanote 30 Minuten brauchen - mit der Sōbu-sen 総武線 (auf der Karte hellblau - quer durch die Mitte) hingegen gerade mal 12 Minuten. Die weiss eingerahmten Bahnhöfe auf der Karte links markieren Bahnhöfe mit Umsteigemöglichkeiten - allein in Shinjuku gibt es 12 verschiedene Umsteigmöglichkeiten!!!
Fast alle Bahnhöfe sind in Englisch ausgeschildert - was die Orientation aber nicht unbedingt einfacher macht, denn in Shinjuku zum Beispiel wechseln täglich rund vier Millionen Menschen den Zug!

Wer länger, also mehrere Wochen oder Monate, in Tokyo bleibt, dem seien sogenannte Gaijin Houses 外人ハウス (gaijin=Ausländer) empfohlen. Jedoch gibt es da schwarze Schafe, sprich sehr schmutzige Häuser. Eine Sammlung von Informationen, Adressen und Preisen findet man unter www.gaijinhouse.net. Persönlich empfehlen kann ich das Aki House あきハウス. Es liegt keine fünf Minuten Fussweg entfernt vom Bahnhof Iidabashi 飯田橋 - mit der Bahn nur jeweils zehn Minuten entfernt von Shinjuku 新宿, Ikebukuro 池袋, Bahnhof Tokyo 東京駅 und Ueno 上野 - zentraler geht es wirklich nicht! Das Aki House ist relativ klein und komplett eingerichtet - es gibt Gemeinschaftsküchen, Duschen (100 Yen), einen Fernsehraum, Waschmaschinen, Klimaanlagen usw. Und es ist ziemlich sauber. Es gibt normale Räume (80'000 Yen pro Monat, ca. 10 m² gross) und seit neuestem auch Capsules, also enge Schlafkammern, für 30'000 Yen. Der Manager Kikuchi wohnt ebenfalls im Aki-House und ist wirklich nett. Im Aki-House leben nicht nur Ausländer, sondern ca. zur Hälfte Japaner - mit denen man sich zum Teil ganz gut unterhalten kann. Wer für begrenzte Zeit in Tokyo ist und sich selbst verpflegen und zentral wohnen will, sollte hier zugreifen.
