Okayama - Beschreibung
Okayama ist mit gut 700'000 Einwohnern die zweitgrösste Stadt der Region Chūgoku (West-Honshū) - nach Hiroshima. Die Stadt liegt ziemlich genau zwischen Ōsaka im Osten und Hiroshima - bis zu beiden Städten sind es rund 140 km Luftlinie. Okayama gilt zudem als Pforte zur Insel Shikoku.
In Japan verbindet man mit der Stadt unter anderem den legendären 桃太郎 Momotarō (Wörtlich: Pfirsich-Hans). In dem in Japan allseits bekannten Märchen entspringt der Held einem Pfirsich, wird von Pflegeeltern mit viel Liebe grossgezogen und zieht später mit seinen Freunden Affe, Hund und Fasan auszieht, um dem Teufel den Garaus zu machen (so laut Legende geschehen in Takamatsu auf der anderen Seite der Seto-Binnensee). Um die Schlacht zu gewinnen, wurde er dabei von seinen Zieheltern mit 吉備団子 Kibidango verpflegt - diese süssen Bällchen aus Reis- und Hirsemehl gelten daher als DIE Spezilität der Stadt. Vor dem Hauptbahnhof der Stadt steht standesgemäss ein Denkmal für Momotarō und seine drei Begleiter.
Okayama: Das Schloss bei Tag...
...und bei Nacht"
Die Gegend um Okayama ist schon seit Jahrtausenden besiedelt, doch bis zum Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts spielte das heutige Okayama keine herausragende Rolle. Im 16. Jahrhundert baute der regionale Herrscher 金光氏 Kanamitsushi ein kleines Schloss am Asahigawa-Fluss im heutigen Okayama. Um 1570 wurde jenes jedoch von 宇喜多 Ukita übernommen - einem mächtigen Daimyō jener Zeit. Ukita erkannte die strategisch günstige Lage und baute das Schloss aus - wodurch zwangsläufig auch die Siedlung rundherum wuchs. Ab dem 17. Jahrhundert wurde die Stadt schliesslich vom 池田氏 Ikeda-Clan regiert - und im Gegensatz zu den meisten Burgen jener Zeit wurde die Präsenz der Burg von Okayama vom Bakufu in Edo (heute: Tokyo) geduldet.
Okayama mauserte sich in den folgenden Jahrhunderten zum bedeutendsten Wirtschaftszentrum der Region. Im Zuge der Abschaffung der traditionellen Lehen (Han) und der Einrichtung von Präfekturen (廃藩置県 Haihan Chiken) 1871 wurde Okayama aus guten Gründen Hauptstadt der Präfektur Okayama. Auch die Industrie begann sich allmählich zu entwickeln. Jene wurde dementsprechend Ziel amerikanischer Bombenangriffe - am 29. Juni 1945 verloren so geschätzte 1'000 Einwohner ihr Leben, und ein grosser Teil der Stadt wurde zerstört.
Die Entwicklung der Stadt ging nach dem Krieg weiter. Seit 1972 ist die Stadt mit dem Shinkansen erreichbar, und seit 1988 ist Okayama über Schiene und Strasse mit dem nahen Shikoku verbunden. Okayama ist heute eine "von der Regierung ausgewiesenen Grossstadt" (政令指定都市 Seireishiteitoshi) - davon gibt es insgesamt 19 in Japan. Diese Städte geniessen Sonderrechte und haben Zugang zu gesonderten Resourcen in Japan.

Die Hauptstrasse von Okayama heisst nicht überraschend 桃太郎通り - Momotarō-Strasse und führt vom Hauptbahnhof schnurstracks Richtung Osten zum Fluss Asahigawa. Läuft man die Strasse rund 1,5 km geradeaus und dann noch ein bisschen weiter geradeaus, kommt man direkt zum Schloss - jenes fällt auf, da es schwarz ist (die meisten Schlösser in Japan sind weiss oder grau). Deshalb trägt die Feste auch den Beinamen 烏城 U-jō (Rabenburg). Der Grundstein für die erste Burg an jener Stelle wurde 1346 gelegt, doch die heutige Form stammt aus dem Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts.
Im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Burgen Japans überlebte das Schloss die Edo-Zeit, doch mit Beginn der Meiji-Restauration gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde das Schloss aufgegeben. Mit Ausnahme eines Nebenturms (Yagura) gingen die Reste des Schlosses leider beim Luftangriff der Amerikaner 1945 verloren. Was man heute sieht, ist ein Nachbau aus Stahlbeton von 1966. Der Nachbau ist jedoch, zumindest von aussen betrachtet, durchaus gelungen. Eintritt in das Schloss (im Inneren gibt es ein Museum sowie von oben einen guten Ausblick über die Stadt) kostet 300 Yen - ein Kombiticket (Schloss und benachbarter Park, siehe unten) kostet 520 Yen und ist empfehlenswert.

Direkt vor dem Schloss, auf einer hakenförmigen Insel im Fluss Asahigawa, liegt der 後楽園 Kōrakuen, ein gut 13 Hektar grosser, wunderschöner Garten, der zu Recht zu einem der 日本三名園 - 3 berühmtesten Gärten Japans gezählt wird (die anderen beiden sind der Kenroku-en in Kanazawa (Präf. Ishikawa) sowie der Kairoku-en in Mito (Präf. Ibaraki)). Der Kōrakuen wurde 1700 fertiggestellt und war der benachbarten Burg angeschlossen - erst 1871 wurde der Park der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht. Der Garten ist gross und sehr vielfältig: Man findet Bäche und Hügel, dichte Wälder und grüne Lichtungen, Sandflächen mit vereinzelten Steinen und Büschen, Seen mit winzigen Inseln mit jeweils einem Baum drauf, Bogenbrücken usw. usf. - der Garten lädt zu einem ausgiebigen Spaziergang ein.
Von Ende Juli bis Mitte August zelebriert man im Garten den 幻想庭園 ("Garten der Illusionen") - ausnahmsweise bleibt der Garten dann bis 21:30 auf und es werden vielerorts Kerzen und spezielle Lichter aufgestellt. Auch die benachbarte Burg wird auf besondere Weise angestrahlt - ein Anblick, den man sich bei einem Besuch im Sommer auf keinen Fall entgehen lassen sollte. Der Eintritt in den Garten kostet 350 Yen - ein Kombiticket (Schloss und benachbarter Park) kostet 520 Yen - man spart damit 130 Yen.
Die beiden Sehenswürdigkeiten sind mit Abstand das Beste, was Okayama zu bieten hat - ansonsten gibt es viel Industrie am Stadtrand und das übliche Gemenge im Zentrum. Ansonsten bietet sich Okayam wunderbar als Sprungbrett an - ins Hinterland von Okayama (zum Beispiel nach Bitchū-Takahashi) sowie zu den zahllosen Inseln in der Seto-Binnensee - sowie nach Shikoku.
Anreise
Okayama liegt an der wichtigen 山陽本線 San'yō-Linie - jene verbindet Ōsaka mit 下関 Shimonoseki - dem Eingang zur Kyūshū. Wie eingangs erwähnt, liegt Okayama genau zwischen Ōsaka und Hiroshima. Die Fahrt nach Hiroshima dauert 41 Minuten mit dem Shinkansen und kostet 6'060 Yen - mit Bummelzügen dauert es fast drei Stunden, dafür kostet die Fahrkarte auch nur die Hälfte. Die Fahrpreise nach Osaka sind exakt die gleichen.
In Okayama beginnt die JR 伯備線 JR Hakubi-Linie - die fährt von der Ostküste Japans bis zur Westküste (das sind in Okayama nur 82 km) nach Yonako 米子. Die Strecke führt quer durch die Berge und ist sehr schön. Die Züge halten unterwegs auch in Bitchū-Takahashi. Der やくも Yakumo Ltd. Express fährt auf der gleichen Linie nach Norden bis nach Matsue (2½ Stunden, 5'870 Yen) bzw. weiter bis nach Izumo.
Auch nach Shikoku kommt man schnell - mit dem マリンライナー Marine Liner Ltd. Express fährt man eine knappe Stunde bis nach Takamatsu (über Sakaide) sowie mit dem しおかぜ Shiokaze Ltd. Express bis nach Matsuyama - das dauert jedoch gute 2½ Stunden und kostet 6'630 Yen. Der Zug hält auch in Marugame. Auch bis nach Kōchi kommt man ohne Umsteigen - mit dem 南風 Minamikaze Ltd. Express. Das dauert fast 3 Stunden und kostet 5,790 Yen - ein kurzer Abstecher unterwegs zur Oboke-Schlucht ist definitiv empfehlenswert.
