Nagoya - Beschreibung
Nagoya ist mit gut 2 Millionen Einwohnern Japans viertgrösste Stadt und hat auch den viertgrössten Hafen, der allerdings ein paar Kilometer vom Zentrum entfernt liegt. Nagoya und Umland wird oft Chūkyō 中京 genannt - "Mittlere Hauptstadt". (Tōkyō ist ja die "östliche Hauptstadt" und Kyōto die ursprünglich eigentliche Hauptstadt). Die Stadt war historisch als Handelsstadt bedeutsam - hier trafen sich die Handelswege Tōkaidō 東海道 (siehe Sekisho-ato Hakone) und Nakasendō 中山道. Und - die drei wichtigsten und bekanntesten Heroen der japanischen Geschichte, Oda Nobunaga 織田信長 & Toyotomi Hideyoshi 豊臣秀吉 (siehe Muromachi-Zeit) sowie Tokugawa Ieyasu 徳川家康 (siehe Edo-Zeit) wurden in Nagoya geboren.

Das übliche Chaos einer japanischen Stadt
Vom alten Glanz ist nicht viel übrig - die Stadt wurde durch Bombenangriffe im Zweiten Weltkrieg nahezu vollständig zerstört. Leider wurden auch der Atsuta-Schrein 熱田神宮 und das Schloss zerstört. Nach dem Krieg wurde die Stadt neu und grosszügig geplant und wiederaufgebaut.
Der Atsuta-Schrein ist neben dem Ise-Schrein 伊勢神宮 in der Präfektur Mie und dem Izumo-Schrein 出雲大社 bei Matsue eine der wichtigsten schintōistischen Stätten. Hier wurde einst das nun angeblich verschollene kusanagi no tsurugi 草薙の剣 (Grasmähschwert, eines der drei Reichsinsignien), aufbewahrt. Der heutige Schrein ist ein Nachbau aus Beton.

Nagoya ist berühmt für den Goldenen Shachihoko (mehr dazu siehe Shachihoko) - der traditionelle "Giebelkarpfen", der das Dach des Schlosses schmückt.
Die Stadt Seto-shi 瀬戸市 15 km östlich von Nagoya beherbergte im Jahre 2005 die EXPO 愛・地球博. Dabei wurden die Erwartungen der Veranstalter - im Gegensatz zur EXPO in Hannover - sogar übertroffen. Auf Nagoya hat die Weltausstellung mit Sicherheit einen positiven Effekt ausgeübt.
Nagoya ist ansonsten irgendwie chūtohanpa 中途半端 - weder Fisch noch Fleisch. Eine blasse Millionenstadt, die durch nichts wirklich hervorsticht. Sagen die Japaner, die nicht in Nagoya wohnen. Und damit haben sie recht.
Anreise
Liegt auf der Strecke des Tōkaidō-Shinkansen, der von Tōkyō-eki über Kyōto, Ōsaka, Hiroshima bis nach Hakata fährt. Mit den Shinkansen, die nicht überall halten, dauert es von Tokyo zwei Stunden, von Kyoto 40 Minuten, Ōsaka eine Stunde, Hiroshima 2½ Stunden und Hakata vier Stunden.
Nagoya liegt natürlich günstig für Fahrten in das Kii-Gebirge 紀伊山地 und in die Präfektur Gifu.
Direkt bis Nagano fährt der Shinano Ltd. Express しなの特急, (dauert drei Stunden). Selbiger hält nach zwei Stunden auch in Matsumoto.
Vom Hafen Nagoya gibt es Fähren nach Sendai und Tomakomai 苫小牧 auf der Insel Hokkaidō.
In der Stadt selbst kommt man mit der U-Bahn hervorragend voran - es gibt vier farblich verschiedene Linien - eine davon ist eine Ringlinie.
