Matsumoto - Beschreibung
Matsumoto hat rund 200'000 Einwohner und ist eine nicht allzu attraktive Industriestadt im gleichnamigen Talkessel. Das Stadtrecht erhielt Matsumoto erst 1907. Aber bereits in der Heian-Zeit wurde die Provinzregierung der ganzen Region, genannt Shinano, hierher verlegt. 1504 wurde schliesslich das noch immer vorhandene Schloss erbaut.

Die Stadt ist im Westen von dem bis über 3000 m hohen Hida-Gebirge 飛騨山脈, im Osten von den Chikuma-Bergen 筑摩山地 umgeben. Dementsprechend ist Matsumoto ein sehr populärer Ausgangspunkt für Wanderer.
Der Hauptgrund, nach Matsumoto zu kommen, ist das Schloss von Matsumoto. Nur 12 Schlösser in Japan sind halbwegs im Originalzustand erhalten geblieben. Matsumoto-jō ist eines davon und der Hauptstadt Tōkyō am nächsten. Daneben gibt es noch ein durchaus interessantes Folklore-Museum 山辺民俗資料館. Der Rest der Stadt ist, nun ja, eine typisch japanische Stadt ebend.
Takiage (!?) zum Neujahrsfest
Durch die Stadt fliesst das kleine Flüsschen Metoba 女鳥羽川. Entlang des Flussbettes werden zu Neujahr kleine Scheiterhaufen (!?) errichtet - mit darumas 達磨 und ähnlichen Symbolen. Ich vermute, dass diese irgendwann angezündet werden - ähnliches wird z.B. auch in Niigata gemacht.
Wer sich für Schlösser und Berge interessiert, ist in Matsumoto genau richtig. Vorteilhaft ist zudem, dass die Stadt nicht allzu weit von Tōkyō entfernt liegt.
Anreise
Der Azusa Ltd. Express あずさ特急列車 fährt von Shinjuku direkt nach Matsumoto. Dauert knapp drei Stunden und kostet ca. 6500 Yen - ist allerdings eine JR-Linie, also frei für Railpass-Besitzer. Bis Hakuba braucht man ca. eine Stunde mit dem Express, bis Nagano mit dem Shinano Expr. しなの特急 eine knappe Stunde. Der gleiche Express fährt auch nach Nagoya, was ziemlich genau 2 Stunden dauert.
