Kyōto - Beschreibung
Während Tōkyō die politische, wirtschaftliche und bildungstechnische Hauptstadt Japans ist, so ist Kyōto die historische und kulturelle Hauptstadt. Die gute Nachricht ist, dass vieles davon erhalten blieb. Die schlechte Nachricht ist, dass nichts richtig zusammenhängt - Kyoto ist halb modern, halb historisch. Dank der Intervention von Japanophilen und Kunsthistorikern entkam die Stadt den üblichen Flächenbombardements im Zweiten Weltkrieg. Nicht aber der konsequent inkonsequenten japanischen Stadtplanung, die zwar alle historischen Stätten erhält und restauriert, dafür aber alles zubaut.

Im Jahre 794 wurde die Hauptstadt von Nara nach Kyoto verlegt - mit einem zehnjährigen Intermezzo in Nagaoka 長岡. Dies leitete auch die lange Heian-Zeit ein. Kyoto ist von drei Seiten von Bergen umgeben - dazu kommen zwei Flüsse. Nach chinesischen Gesichtspunkten eine sehr gute Lage. Gebaut wurde die Stadt im Schachbrettmuster - Vorbild war indirekt die Stadt Xi'an im China der Táng-Dynastie. Seitdem war Kyōto Sitz der japanischen Kaiser (tennō), und noch heute finden die Krönungszeremonien (von denen es im 20. Jhd. nur drei gab!) in Kyoto statt. Erst 1869 wurde die Hauptstadt offiziell nach Tōkyō verlegt - welches bereits lange vorher schon inoffizielle politische Hauptstadt war.
Steigt man heute im Bahnhof Kyōto aus, landet man in einem gigantisch grossen, modernen Bahnhof - genauer gesagt ist das angeschlossene Kaufhaus Isetan 伊勢丹 mit 13 Etagen und einer halb offenen Mittelhalle riesengross. Die ganzen Sehenswürdigkeiten der Stadt liegen in der ganzen Stadt und im weiten Umfeld verstreut. Wer alles sehen will, braucht einige Wochen. Kyoto selbst hat auch immerhin 1.4 Mio Einwohner.
Unbedingt sollte man die alten Vergnügungsviertel Ponto-chō 先斗町 und Gion 祇園 sehen. Hier findet man noch alte, exklusive Teehäuser, z.B. das Ichiriki 一力, in denen die Maiko 舞子 ("echte" Geishas gibt es nicht mehr - Maiko sind eigentlich "junge, lernende Geishas") unterhalten. In Gion sind die Chancen gross, eine Maiko zu Gesicht zu bekommen. Persönlich hielt ich aber nicht viel davon, hinterherzurennen um sie zu fotografieren.

Schon im dritten bis vierten Jahrhundert gab es Schreine (shintoistisch) im Gebiet des heutigen Kyoto. Damals war der Buddhismus noch nicht nach Japan gekommen. Das änderte sich aber bald - der Buddhismus fasste Fuss in Japan, und Kyōto wurde, da es ja ab dem 8. Jhd. Hauptstadt war, zu einem Zentrum des Buddhismus in Japan. Dementsprechend wurden viele Tempel errichtet. Mit der bekannteste Tempel dürfte der Kinkaku-ji 金閣寺 (Goldener Pavillon-Tempel) sein. Erbaut wurde er 1397 als Villa für einen Shōgun. Nach dessen Tode wurde die Anlage zu einem buddhistischen Tempel umgewidmet. Der Kinkaku-ji besteht aus einem Landschaftsgarten und zahlreichen Gebäuden, von denen allerdings nur noch wenige stehen. Am bekanntesten ist der auf Pfählen erbaute Pavillon im See. Dieser wurde 1950 von einem obsessiven Mönch niedergebrannt, kurz darauf jedoch wieder aufgebaut. Der Kinkaku-ji ist eine Art Symbol Kyōtos geworden.
Der Goldene Tempel liegt im Nordwesten der Stadt - vom Bahnhof fährt man über eine halbe Stunde mit dem Bus. Eintritt kostet 400 Yen. Die Anlage ist immer gut besucht.

Im Ostteil der Stadt - quasi zwischen dem Bahnhof und den Bergen, liegt der grosse Tempel Sanjūsangen-dō 三十三間堂, zu Deutsch "Halle der dreiunddreißig Nischen." Dies bezieht sich auf die Zwischenräume zwischen den Säulen im Inneren. Der Tempel wurde im 12. Jahrhundert gebaut, nach einer Feuersbrunst allerdings neu errichtet in der Mitte des 13. Jhd. Der Hauptbau ist mit 120 m ziemlich lang aber schmal (bei einem alljährlichen Festival schiessen Bogenschützen Pfeile von einem Ende zum anderen - wer die meisten Pfeile in 24 Stunden verschiesst, gewinnt).
Im Inneren wartet eine Überraschung: Eine Phalanx von 1001 lebensgrossen, messingfarbenen Kannons (auch bekannt als Avalokitevara, alle von ihnen mit 40 Armen, denn jeder Arm rettet 25 Welten = 1000armiger Buddha) gruppiert sich links und rechts des Hauptaltars. Beeindruckend ist die Tatsache, dass alle unterschiedliche Gesichter haben - das gleicht der Tonkriegerarmee von Xi'an. Der Sanjusangen-do hat täglich geöffnet, Eintritt kostet 600 ¥.

So ziemlich die bekannteste Sehenswürdigkeit von Kyoto dürfte der Kiyomizu-dera 清水寺 im Osten der Stadt sein. Erstmal zum Namen: kiyo bedeutet "rein", mizu bedeutet "Wasser" und -dera steht für "Tempel". Dieser Tempel (=buddhistisch) gehört zu den wenigen in Kyoto, die noch während der Heian-Zeit gebaut wurden. Der Grundstein wurde wohl schon im Jahre 778 gelegt. Das Hauptgebäude (genannt hondō) wie man es heute sieht stammt allerdings aus dem Jahre 1633. Dieser Bau und andere Bereiche zählen zur feinen Auswahl der kokuhō 国宝 (Nationalschätze) und nebenher zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe.
Interessant ist die Bühne vor dem Haupttempel, die da über dem Abgrund auf einem hohen Gerüst gebaut wurde. Jenes ist rund 13 Meter hoch und wurde ohne einen einzigen Nagel gebaut. Eine Geschichte besagt, dass sich einst ein holder Jüngling hier das Leben nehmen wollte, allerdings von den blühenden Kirschbäumen aufgefangen wurde. Seitdem steht das Sprichwort kiyomizu no butai kara tobioriru (tsumori) 清水の舞台 から飛び降りるつもりで (wörtl.: (sollte) von der Bühne des Kiyomizu springen) für "den Rubikon überschreiten" resp. ein Wagnis eingehen.
A propos Kirschblüten: Der Tempel ist allgemein schon extrem beliebt und sehr überlaufen, von einheimischen wie weniger heimischen Touristen. Das ganze steigert sich jedoch noch wesentlich während der Kirschblüte (=hanami 花見) im April, im Winter falls mal Schnee liegen sollte, während der hatsumōde 初詣, dem ersten Tempelbesuch im Neujahr) und... eigentlich immer.

Ein echtes Juwel: Der Kennin-ji (Kennin-Tempel)
Eine weitere Hauptattraktion in Kyōto ist die einmalige Nijō-jō 二条城 (Nijo-Burg). Kyoto mit seinem Schachbrettmuster ist in -jō unterteilt - Distrikte sozusagen. Nijo bedeutet Zweiter Bezirk. Diese prächtige Burg soll an anderer Stelle näher vorgestellt werden.
Karesansui (Steingarten) im Ryōan-ji
Einen guten Kilometer entfernt vom Kinkaku-ji befindet sich der Ryōan-ji 龍安寺 (Tempel der Drachenruhe). Dieser Tempel wurde 1450 von der Rinzai-Sekte gegründet und enthält den wohl berühmtesten Steingarten des Landes. Diese Gärten werden karesansui 枯山水 (trockene Landschaft) genannt und zählen zu den kanshō 観賞-Gärten, die "Schaugärten", welche nur von einem einzigen Punkt aus zu betrachten sind.
Der Steingarten des Ryōan-ji wurde wahrscheinlich um 1500 erschaffen - der Erschaffer selbst ist unbekannt. In diesem Garten findet man 15 unterschiedlich grosse Steine, zum Teil mit etwas Moos umgeben und in Gruppen zusammengefasst. Sie sollen die kosmologische Gleichgültigkeit abstrakt darstellen. Das mag man verstehen oder nicht - Fakt ist jedoch, dass das Gleichgewicht zwischen leerem Raum und den Steingruppen wirklich beeindruckend ist.
Eintritt in den Ryōan-ji kostet 400 Yen. Der Tempel, vor allem aber der Podest, von dem man den Steingarten sehen kann, sind oft extrem überlaufen. Sehr früh oder im tiefsten Winter zu erscheinen ist deshalb keine schlechte Idee.
Anreise
Liegt auf der Strecke des Tōkaidō & San'yō-Shinkansen 東海道・山陽新幹線, der von Tōkyō-eki über Nagoya, Ōsaka, Hiroshima bis nach Hakata fährt. Mit den Shinkansen, die nicht überall halten, dauert es von Tokyo 2h 40', nach Ōsaka zwanzig Minuten, Hiroshima knapp zwei Stunden und Hakata fast 3 ½ Stunden.
Natürlich gibt es auch langsamere und vor allem billigere Züge nach Ōsaka sowie in sämtliche Himmelsrichtungen.
