Kōbe - Beschreibung
Kōbe ist eine wunderschön zwischen Meer und Bergen gelegene, langgezogene Stadt mit ca. 1.4 Millionen Einwohnern. Mit Kōbe assoziiert man in Japan westliches Flair, denn schon sehr früh liessen sich viele Europäer, aber auch Chinesen, hier nieder, sowie gutes Essen. Die Stadt ist aber auch bekannt für den 山口組 (Yamaguchi-gumi, gumi=Clan) - die mit Abstand stärkste Yakuza-Gruppe Japans.

Kobe: In der Ijinkan-Strasse
Vom Fuss der Berge - der herausragendste unter ihnen der 931 m hohe 六甲山 (Rokkō-san) bis zum Meer sind es stellenweise nur ca. 1,5 km. Zwischen Meer und Berge verlaufen die beiden Hauptverkehrsadern der Stadt - die Kōbe-Linien von JR und Hankyū (zwei Eisenbahngesellschaften) sowie die Autobahn #3. Das Zentrum erstreckt sich dabei auf beiden Seiten zwischen den Stationen 三宮 / 三ノ宮 (Sannomiya, beide Schreibweisen üblich) und der Station Kōbe selbst. Die Shinkansen-Trasse verläuft weiter nördlich und meistens unterirdisch.
Ein paar hundert Meter nördlich von Sannomiya, parallel zur Bahnlinie und bereits ein paar dutzend Meter oberhalb der Stadt verläuft die bildhübsche 異人館通り (Ijinkan-Dōri, dōri =Strasse). Schon der Name sagt einiges aus: "Ijin" sind die "fremden Menschen", ein altes Wort für Ausländer. -kan sind die Häuser. Die Strasse ist nur ein Teil von Kobe's berühmten Ijinkan - den Ausländerhäusern. In besagter Strasse stehen zahlreiche schmucke, ausländisch (holländisch, englisch usw) anmutende Villen. Die Strasse beherbergt heute viele Boutiquen, feine Cafes und mehr.
Aber auch die Strassen zwischen Bahnlinie im Norden und Hafen im Süden beherbergt neben nagelneuen Hochhäusern zahlreiche wuchtige, alte Prachtbauten, die ebensogut in Paris, London oder Berlin stehen könnten. Hinzu kommt eine ausgeprägte China-Town bei 元町 (Motomachi) zwischen Sannomiya und Kobe mit unzähligen Restaurants.
Schlagartig berühmt wurde sie durch ein schweres Erdbeben der Stärke 7.2 in den Morgenstunden des 17. Januar 1995 - genannt 阪神淡路大震災 (Grosses Hanshin Awaji - Erdbeben) ("Han" - zweites Schriftzeichen im Namen Ōsaka; "Shin" = andere Lesung des ersten Schriftzeichens im Namen Kōbe; Awaji ist eine grosse Insel nahe Kōbe, unter der sich das Epizentrum befand).

Das Beben war verheerend, aber aufgrund der frühen Uhrzeit hatte man Glück im Unglück, denn der Verkehr war noch nicht in vollem Gange. Grosse Gebäude und Hochstrassen stürzten ein oder wurden irreparabel geschädigt, der Boden unter den Neulandinseln wie 六甲アイランド (Rokko-Island) und ポートアイランド (Port Island) verflüssigte sich teilweise (genaueres dazu siehe Tōkyō-to Kōtō-ku und beschädigte die darauf befindlichen Strukturen schwer. Richtig schlimm wurde es jedoch im Stadtviertel 長田区 (Nagata-ku) rund um die Station 新長田 Shin-Nagata (Neu-Nagata): Hier standen eng bebaute Wohnviertel mit für Japan typischem, minimalsten Abstand zwischen den Holzhäusern. Eine Feuerwalze frass sich durch ein paar der Nachbarschaften und forderte sehr viele Opfer.
Das Beben kam unerwartet - sicher erwartet man ständig irgendwo in Japan ein Erdbeben, aber ein grosses Erdbeben wurde eher in der Kantō-Region erwartet. Schon drei Jahre später waren offensichtliche Schäden kaum noch zu sehen - nur zahlreiche Baustellen. Schon jetzt dürfte der Wiederaufbau nahezu vollständig abgeschlossen sein. Einzig der Erdbeben-Gedenkpark am Ufer im Stadtzentrum wird an die Katastrophe erinnern. Mehr über Erdbeben und ein Ausschnitt der Schadensanalyse siehe unter Erdbeben in Japan.
Pikantes Detail: Ich habe mit ein paar Leuten gesprochen, die das Erdbeben unmittelbar erlebt hatten. Deren einstimmigen Berichten zufolge war der oben erwähnte Yamaguchi-Clan die schnellste Hilfe - bevor staatliche Organe in Schwung kamen, verteilten sie bereits Decken und Suppe, halfen Leuten aus den Trümmern usw.

Neuanfang in Nagata-ku
Meiner Meinung nach ist Kōbe eine der angenehmsten Großstädte Japans und ein guter Platz zum Leben (nunja, von Erdbeben mal abgesehen). Tipp: Einfach mal einen Tag Zeit nehmen und durch die Stadt schlendern - man wird nicht enttäuscht sein. Und - Kōbe wird zurecht gerühmt für sein 神戸牛 (Kōbe-Rind) (unsagbar feines, aber sehr teures Rindfleisch, siehe Japanische Küche)
Kōbe ist des weiteren sehr gut geeignet für interessante Ausflüge - so zum Beispiel zur 淡路島 (Insel Awaji), eine sehr ländliche und landschaftlich reizvolle Insel - ihres Zeichens die grösste Insel der Seto-Binnensee oder zur grössten Hängebrücke der Welt (mehr dazu siehe Akashi).

Anreise
Liegt auf der Strecke des Tōkaidō & San'yō-Shinkansen, der von Tōkyō-eki über Nagoya, Kyōto, Ōsaka, Hiroshima bis nach Hakata fährt. Mit den Shinkansen, die nicht überall halten, dauert es von Tōkyō ca. 3 bis 3½ Stunden, von Kyōto eine gute halbe Stunde, Ōsaka 15 Minuten, Hiroshima ca. 1½ Stunden und Hakata 2 bis 3 Stunden. Der Shinkansen-Bahnhof heisst Shin-Kōbe (Neu-kobe) nördlich des Stadtzentrums (leicht zu erreichen mit der U-Bahn).
Selbstredend fahren andere Züge in fast alle Himmelsrichtungen. Nach Ōsaka fahren auch Züge vom Bahnhof in der Innenstadt - das dauert nur 30 Minuten und ist billiger und bequemer. Direkt nach Norden, Richtung Japanmeer-Küste, fahren auch Züge, aber das dauert eine ganze Weile.
Kōbe möchte sich einen grossen, nagelneuen Flughafen auf einer Neulandinsel bauen. Da fragt man sich, wozu. Schliesslich liegt der auf der anderen Seite der Bucht, und man kann in weniger als einer halben Stunde mit dem Schnellboot zum Kansai International Airport 関西国際空港 (bei Ōsaka) fahren.
