Fukuoka - Beschreibung
Fukuoka ist Verwaltungssitz der gleichnamigen Präfektur und mit 1,25 Mio Einwohnern die grösste Stadt der Region & Insel Kyūshū. Eigentlich ist Fukuoka auch die einzige Millionenstadt weit und breit, denn die nahgelegene gerade-so-Millionenstadt Kitakyūshū 北九州 ist ein erst jüngst geschaffenes Kunstgebilde.
Dabei ist auch Fukuoka eigentlich keine einzelne Stadt, sondern das Ergebnis der Zusammenlegung von Fukuoka und Hakata 博多. Deshalb wird man z.B. keinen Shinkansen finden, der nach Fukuoka fährt - sie fahren alle nach Hakata.

Das Zentrum der Stadt konzentriert sich um die kleine Insel Nakasu 中洲 ("mittlere Sandbank") im Naka-gawa 那珂川 (Mittlerer Fluss), der am Hafen von Fukuoka in die Bucht von Hakata mündet. Unweit davon, gleich in der Nähe des Rathauses, befndet sich das lebhafte Geschäfts- und Einkaufsviertel Tenjin 天神, das in seiner Geschäftigkeit etwas an Shinjuku/Tōkyō erinnert. Neben den ganzen Kaufhäusern liegt der Tenjin-Park. Dort, an der Kreuzung des Rathauses, befindet sich das 13 Etagen hohe Akurosu Fukuoka (Across Fukuoka) アクロス福岡 mit einer grossen, dem Park zugewandten Terasse. Wäre der Glasturm in der Mitte nicht, dächte man, dies sein ein grüner Hügel. Diese Terasse wird Suteppu gâden ステップガーデン (Stufengarten) genannt und ist einfach genial. Die komplette Terasse ist begrünt - ein den echten Bergen nachempfundenes Entwässerungssystem reguliert den Lauf des Wassers. Die Terasse ist - bis ganz oben - kostenlos begehbar. In 60 m Höhe gibt es eine Aussichtsplattform.

Nakasu und der Naka-gawa
Fukuoka war und ist ein wichtiges kulturelles, politisches und Handelszentrum der Insel Kyūshū. Allerdings ist die Stadt sehr modern - von den einzelnen, obligatorischen Schreinen und Tempeln einmal abgesehen - gibt es keine grossartigen historischen Bauten oder Strassenzüge. Auch das einstige Schloss ist heute eine Ruine und im Maizuru-Kōen 舞鶴公園 (Park des tanzenden Kranich) westlich des Zentrums eingebettet. Trotz allem hat die Stadt Atmosphäre und ist durchaus einen Abstecher wert.
Anreise
"Hauptbahnhof" der Stadt Fukuoka ist der Bahnhof Hakata 博多, der nicht allzu weit entfernt vom Zentrum liegt. Von hier fährt auch eine U-Bahn direkt ins Zentrum. Hakata ist Endhaltestelle des Shinkansen - zumindest vorerst, denn:
Neu!!! Am 13. März 2004 wird das erste Teilstück des JR Kyushu Shinkansen JR九州新幹線 eröffnet. Die Strecke soll, wenn sie fertig ist, von Kagoshima über Kumamoto bis Hakata/Fukuoka verlaufen. Vorerst wird die Strecke von Kagoshima Chūō 鹿児島中央 (Kagoshima Central, vormals "Nishi Kagoshima") bis Shin-Yatsushiro 新八代 südlich von Kumamoto eröffnet. Fahrtzeit: rd. 40 Minuten (vorher 2h10' mit dem Tsubame Ltd. Express). Fahrpreis: 9'420 ¥. Von Yatsushiro braucht man bis Hakata ca. 1h 20 Minuten.
Von Tōkyō braucht man mit dem Hikari ひかり-Shinkansen 6 Stunden bis Fukuoka. Nicht schlecht - schliesslich sind dies 1300 km! So weit mit dem Shinkansen nach Fukuoka zu fahren ist allerdings nur für Railpass-Benutzer interessant, denn sonst wird es richtig teuer: ca. 44'000 ¥ (hin und zurück). Wesentlich billiger ist das Flugzeug - kostet ab ca. 20'000 ¥ hin und zurück. Der Int'l Airport Fukuoka 福岡空港 hat viele Auslandsflüge (selbst Transkontinentalflüge) und Inlandsverbindungen. Bis zur Hauptstadt dauert der Flug nur 1¾ Stunden.
Fukuoka ist für viele der Startpunkt für Reisen durch die Insel. Von hier fahren - meist JR-Linien - Expresszüge nach Nagasaki (Kamome Ltd. Express, 2 Stunden かもめ特急), nach Kumamoto (Tsubame Ltd. Express つばめ特急, 1¼ Stunden), Kagoshima (auch Tsubame, knapp 4 Stunden), Beppu (Yufu & Yufuin Ltd. Express ゆふ特急, gut 3 Stunden) usw.
Vom Hafen fahren Fähren nach Tōkyō, Ōsaka, Okinawa sowie bis nach Pusan 釜山 (Südkorea). Die schnelle Fähre braucht nur 3 Stunden bis Pusan und kostet 21'500 ¥ hin und zurück (nun ja, für diesen Preis gibt es auch schon Flüge von Tōkyō nach Seoul!).

Wahrscheinlich das Übliche. Keine speziellen Tipps, da bei Bekannten untergekommen.

Bezüglich Übernachtung habe ich als Fukuoka-jin zwei Tipps:
1) Das Nishitetsu Inn bei Hakata ist zwar im mittleren Preissegment einzuordnen, hat aber im Kellergeschoss ein herrliches klassische Bad, dass man ausserhalb der Saison am Abend meist für sich alleine hat.
2) Wer vorhat eine Woche oder länger zu bleiben, der sollte sich überlegen ein Weekly-Mansion Apartment zu buchen. Sehr zu empfehlen dabei das Access Tenjin nahe dem Tenjin Bahnhof. Recht günstig, gute Lage, es gibt (umsonst) Internet per LAN und man kann sich dort ein Fahrrad für 100円 pro Tag mieten.
