Fukui - Beschreibung
Fukui ist der Hauptort der gleichartigen Präfektur, die etwas abseits an der Westküste Japans liegt. Die Stadt selbst hat für japanische Verhältnisse nur recht magere 250.000 Einwohner und ist nicht sonderlich attraktiv. Kein Wunder - im zweiten Weltkrieg wurde die Stadt durch Luftangriffe stark zerstört; den Rest erledigte das schwere Fukui Jishin 福井地震 (=Erdbeben) 1948. Heute ist Fukui nicht mehr und nicht weniger als eine Industriestadt.

Viel ist von damals nicht geblieben. Der Hauptbahnhof der Stadt liegt relativ zentral. Keine 10 Minuten zu Fuss entfernt östlich des Bahnhofs findet man die Burgruine. Fukui-jō 福井城 (Burg von Fukui) wurde ab 1601 vom Tokugawa-Clan gebaut, jedoch sind davon nur noch der Burggraben und die rechteckigen, traditionell sehr massiven Aussenmauern vorhanden. Heute beherbergt der innere Wall die modernen Gebäude des kenchō 県庁 (Präfekturverwaltung).
Durchquert man das Burggelände gen Norden, so kommt man hinter dem Schloss ins alte Samuraiviertel, aber auch dort ist nicht allzu viel übrig geblieben. Sehenswert sind dort allerdings das gōshi hakubutsukan 郷士博物館 ("Landesherr-"museum) und eine alte Residenz namens yōkōkan 養浩館, umgeben von einem sehr schönen Garten.

Ansonsten gibt es die üblichen Schreine und Tempel und Landschaft drumherum, aber ein wahrer Touristenmagnet ist die Stadt aus oben genannten Gründen einfach nicht. Allerdings bietet sich die Stadt als Sprungbrett zu interessanten Zielen in der Umgebung an - zum Beispiel zum Eiheiji.
Anreise
Fukui liegt abseits der Shinkansen-Routen, ist aber trotzdem relativ gut erreichbar. So fährt zum Beispiel der Thunderbird-Express von Kyōto (knapp 1½ Stunden, 5010 ¥) nach Fukui und von dort weiter Richtung Kanazawa (1,280 ¥ mit dem Bummelzug, 1½ Stunden) bis nachToyama. Man kann auch mit Bummelzügen von und nach Kyoto fahren - kostet dann nur 2500 ¥ und dauert um die 3 Stunden (drei Mal umsteigen). Mehr dazu wie man zum berühmten Eiheiji kommt siehe Anreise Eiheiji.
Übernachtung
Da nicht allzu viele Touristen - weder Ausländer noch Japaner - sich nach Fukui verirren, beschränkt sich die Auswahl auf die üblichen Businesshotels.
